Laura Melisa Herrera Fernandez comes to the Houghton Rotary club from Sogamoso Colombia. She is sponsored by the Rotary Club of Sogamoso. Laura has completed high school in her home town and will attend college when she returns in a year. In her spare time she likes to draw, listen to music, watch movies and talk with friends.
Laura recently turned 17--she shares her birthday with her country's Independence Day (July 20th).
Sogamoso is called the "city of sun and steel" in honor of a God who guided the "muisca culture" and the steel manufacturing that has made their economy recognized around the world.
Laura "doesn't like spicy food" which works well being in the Upper Peninsula and she loves dogs (good thing since the Beaghan's have two very large dogs).
Laura wants to be an excellent ambassador for her country and show them that Colombia "is not the country they watch on TV or in the news. Colobmia is not only wars and drugs."
